About Me

Demoing a brand new Wintech King LW8

My name is Savannah, and I have a passion for rowing. This will be my 7th year of rowing, 4 years experience in HS and beginning my third year in college. I've never thought of rowing for a Varsity crew team, mainly because I am an Ohio Bobcat, and I love my teammates. It's not only my love of rowing in the morning that gets me up before dawn, but it's knowing I'll get to see my teammates, and knowing that we are going to work harder to achieve more than the year before.

I was a coxswain in HS, for a solid three years. My junior year, I began to row as I got taller, and did a majority of rowing, with coxing on the side my senior year. I knew I wanted to go to Ohio University, because of their stellar Journalism program, and when I discovered that they also had a crew team, fate was sealed.

I started off coxing for the Varsity 4+ in college, and rowing for the Novice 4+. By spring time my Freshman year, I was officially just a rower, earning the 2 seat spot in the Varsity 8+. Sophomore year brought a new coach, and with it, some line-up changes. In the fall, I was elected Regatta Chair and rowed 4 seat in the the Varsity 8+. In the winter I took up the co-novice coaching role on top of rowing. Myself and the other coach led our Novice 4+ to 5th place in semi-finals at their national race (falling 3 boats short of finals) as well as to a handful of medals in previous regattas. As far as rowing goes, I maintained my 4 seat position for a majority of the season, but took on stroke seat for the last race.

Fast forward to the present, I'm back to just rowing, but am the newly elected President of the club. I've recently hired a head coach for the Varsity squad, and a novice coach for, well, the Novice squad! We got to demo a brand new boat just today (September 14, 2011) as pictured above. It was simply heaven on earth, being that we're used to boats from the early '90s.

Our season just started, and with this season, I will put three more races under my belt (all of which I have made previous appearances--in HS and my first two years of college).

What's to come for myself? I'd certainly love to acquire a job that relates to rowing-- maybe a boat rep for the East or West coast... maybe a journalist for RowingNews magazine! That, only time will tell. In the meantime, I want to continue to improve my stroke, become a certified Level III coach, establish myself as a better stroke seat, and get my name out in the rowing world.
